The Backfire Over Bush's Immigration Proposal

Well it's been quite interesting since the President gave his speech last night, and for the most part all reactions I have seen have been negative. I was very optimistic, but the more I hear the more I dislike this. It is not that I have a problem with putting the troops on the border, that's exactly what I want. The problem is that we are only sending 6,000 troops and in support roles at that. If we wanted to shut down the border we could do so effectively and swiftly if the supplied the troops to do so and absorbed the Minuteman into the effort, But you and I know that's not going to happen.
"Thinly veiled attempts to promote amnesty cannot be tolerated,' said Rep. Tom Price, R-GA. "While America is a nation of immigrants, we are also a nation of laws, and rewarding those who break our laws not only dishonors the hard work of those who came here legally but does nothing to fix our current situation."
Senator Kerry had more encouraging words for us all, "This is a moment when the far right is
horribly wrong and leadership is required to set a course for common sense. We need a comprehensive answer to immigration that includes tightening border security, but putting another burden on the backs of the National Guard troops who are serving their second tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan isn't the right answer. The National Guard which has borne the burden of a broken policy in Iraq shouldn't have to bear the burden of an incomplete immigration policy. The right answer is to listen to the 9/11 Commission and put the border patrol agents we need right there on the border. It won't satisfy the right wing, but it's the right policy."
Mexican Left-wing newspaper La Jornada saw the move as a show of force by the United States just six weeks before presidential elections in Mexico. "Installing National Guard support bases on the border is a way of warning Mexican voters... That the relationship with the United States could get dangerously complicated if a president is elected who does not understand the gringo power," wrote the paper's columnist Julio Hernández López.
Mexico obviously doesn't want the border shut down, they want to be able to send people across the border and not want to take resposiblity for the horrible economic condition that Mexico is in.
Unless we truly an effectively shut down the border we can not have real immigration reform. This is our resposiblity to our country, and our children to do the right thing

It seems you need to chill a bit...

Listen to some country music from Germany:

I have just written about TEXAS LIGHTNING, a German country band, which will represent our country at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Contrary to popular belief, many Germans love cowboys, country music and Texas! And more and more Americans love soccer and will watch the World Cup next month. => German-American relations are finally improving again.
