BEIRUT, Lebanon - Hezbollah militants crossed into
Israel on Wednesday and captured two Israeli soldiers. Israel responded in southern Lebanon with warplanes, tanks and gunboats, and said that seven of its soldiers had been killed in the violence.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert called the soldiers' capture "an act of war," and his Cabinet prepared to approve more military action in Lebanon — a second front in the fight against Islamic militants by Israel, which already is waging an operation to free a captured soldier in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli army said three soldiers were killed in the initial raid, and four others were killed when their tank went over a land mine in southern Lebanon.
Olmert said he held the Lebanese government responsible for the two soldiers' safety, vowing that the Israeli response "will be restrained, but very, very, very painful."
Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah says he will not release the captives except as part of a prisoner swap.
Israeli jets struck deep into southern Lebanon, blasting bridges and Hezbollah positions and killing two civilians, the Lebanese officials said.
The Israeli military planned to call up thousands of reservists, and residents of Israeli towns on the border with Lebanon were ordered to seek cover in underground bomb shelters.

Hezbollah has decided to enter into this turbulent military action and decidedly piss of the Israelis. With Israel already engaged in the Gaza Strip and with the military mindset that they are currently in, it was not a good idea to piss them off even further. Israel has already pounded many areas in south Lebanon while continuing to take the offensive in Gaza. These terrorists, and that’s what they are, show no respect for borders, lives, property, schools and mosques. Anything that Israel does to protect its borders can be laid at the feet of Hezbollah and Hamas. Israel showed last year it wanted peace when it disengaged from the Gaza Strip, leaving it to the Palestinian Authority, now there are daily rocket attacks against Israel with terrorists controlling the area. They have tried peace, but it is more than obvious that the people of Palestine and Hezbollah wish nothing more than the utter destruction of Israel, they have showed no interest in peace, only death. They will receive more than they had been prepared for. Israel must go all the way and crush them with all available means at their disposal. The Muslims do not think in such short-terms, they look at the big picture as we must. We must support our friends and allies in their bitter struggle against this vile coward of an enemy.

Where'd the other post go?
look down the page. that was yesterdays post
I certainly understand your concern and outrage at the capture or kidnapping of the twwo Israeli soldiers reported today. Am also concerned!
However, it's clear that bombs and bullets aren't working -- why not urge the Israelis to take a softer approach before the "utter destruction" you mention doesn't occur to Irael, Lebanon and what we call the "Palestinian State"?
Look at the mess we got into in Iraq after we invaded a country that we had in our grips (north and south no-fly zones, sanctions, inspections, etc.)! There were at least ten other ways to remove Saddam from power that wouldn't have involved 2500-plus of our finest dying and tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis too.
At least on that, we can agree, no?
yes and no
They just haven't hit the Pals with enough bombs and bullets yet...
Give Israel a few days, they'll wipe out every raghead big enough to die, and rightfully so...
Dr. Ryan, I don't agree that a softer approach is the way to go, THAT has been done to death, Peace accord after truce after olive branch always broken by the Muslim horde. I think Utter destruction is the only way the free world will have peace again.
Appeasement DOES NOT WORK people. get a clue and give em hell then we might have a chance.
Ask the British if appeasment works, thats what they tried with Hitler
Yes, and war is working wonders. After all, Israel won their peace by all the bombs and bullets they've used over the years... Oh, maybe that's what Dr. Ryan is saying - that bombs and bullets haven't won any peace yet.
"wiping out every raghead big enough to die," Fred? How big is that? fifteen years old? Ten? I've a daughter who's ten and she'd be pretty resentful if her 15 year old brother were killed. Perhaps if she were a "raghead," you'd think she might ought to be pre-emptively killed?
Fred, I try to be open-minded, but I have to tell you that sometimes your "morality" disgusts me.
no you a naive
If that is directed towards me, Mr. Guy, educate me. In what way am I naive?
Because I believe that violence tends to escalate? Because I believe that if someone attacks us, our inclination is to want to attack them (and that the opposite is true)?
Or is it naive to think that if we have weapons of mass destruction and have demonstrated a willingness to use them, that others will feel compelled to get the biggest WMDs themselves, out of self-preservation?
Am I naive for believing what Christianity and all world religions say when they command us to "do unto others as we'd have them do unto us? To overcome evil with good?" Is that naive? Is it because I'm a person of faith?
Well, that last one may be true. It may be crazy to believe in and trust God in today's world (or any world). But I'm not asking us to make policy based upon my crazy and naive belief system - I'm not asking our country to be a pacifist because that is what my faith system teaches. I'm just asking that we base policy upon a frank, rational and responsible look at the way things are.
But feel free to tell me how I'm being naive. Just understand that I am well aware that people are willing to use bombs and kill innocent people. Terrorists do it. We do it. It seems to be the human condition. I fully understand that. And knowing that people are willing to kill innocent people, I'm looking for the most logical way to address that, without engaging in fear-mongering, anarchy or elitism.
Please educate me how we can do so. I can be taught.
If you have yet to figure it out, nothing I can say will change that
You'll never win any converts that way.
But then, I see that as a good thing. I don't want the US to be a rogue nation that places itself above the law and, fortunately, your position is in the minority. So here's to being as "wise as serpents and innocent as doves!"
I believe the only times I refer to targeting civilians is when I've talked about Hiroshima, etc, which many if not most "conservatives" are unwiling to denounce. I have talked about using weaponry that we KNOW will kill civilians, even if unintentional and stated that I disagree with this notion.
As to my faith, I'm not sure what you're asking. I am a Christian in the anabaptist (mennonite, amish) tradition. I recognize, however, that all the major world religions share the common command: Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you.
Likewise, I recognize that many religious folk (Christian, Muslim and otherwise) reject this command in favor of the notion of Violence-as-acceptable-solution IF the times call for it. Does that address what you're asking?
